This TECH TARIK: SPRING 2017, we are blessed to have 2 key prominent figures in Singapore who are pioneers in their own sectors, some call them 'maverick', 'crazy' or 'mad'. Whatever it is, their footprints have transformed the lands they embarked on: Jurong Island, Biopolis and Kampung Kampus. Announcing the exclusive entrée for TECH TARIK SPRING:

[1] GUEST: Chairman Philip Yeo

Philip Yeo is unlike any civil servant. He prefers action over talk, cartoons over words and speed over due process. The maverick was blunt, direct and not afraid to challenge the status quo, earning him a reputation not only as one of Singapore’s most accomplished government officials, but also among its most colourful bureaucrats. As the former Economic Development Board chairman, his brilliant achievements are almost unparalleled in the history of the Singapore civil service. Yeo was the man who turned Batam into a household name in Singapore, created Jurong Island from seawater and put the country on the biomedical map globally with its iconic Biopolis. The famous rule breaker bulldozed his way through the bureaucracy he was a part of, blazing new paths in a manner more akin to an entrepreneur than a civil servant. In the process, he offended more than a few and was never afraid to challenge naysayers publicly, regardless of status and background. Extracted from Straits Times Press page for "Neither Civil Nor Servant".

[2] HOST: Kampung Chief Tay Lai Hock

Lai Hock is the Founder and 'Kampung Chief' of the Ground-Up Initiative (GUI). He has been rallying the power of community through its weekly Balik Kampung programme to grow GUI since 2008, starting from a tiny plot of land through the grace of a local farmer at Lim Chu Kang. Quickly outgrowing that, GUI moved to Yishun in April 2009 where it has collectively raised and grown its base, the Sustainable Living Kampung, from a mere 100sqm of space to over 1500sqm. This has enabled GUI to nurture a 21st Century Kampung Culture that connects many people to GUI’s vision of a 5G society – Gracious, Green, Giving, Grounded and Grateful. GUI will soon begin constructing the Kampung campus, a low carbon footprint campus, to serve a wider audience in Singapore as well as the region. Many values and philosophies guide this vision. The African proverb: “Go fast, go alone. Go far, go together”, motivated Lai Hock to bring many kindred spirits to realise this vision together. Before GUI, Lai Hock was 6 years a professional soldier and 11 years a highly successful regional corporate business and marketing man before leaving to backpack around the world for more than 4 years in the quest to discover something truly meaningful to do with his life.

You also get a rare opportunity to learn about their stories, perhaps even buy "Neither Civil Nor Servant" and get it signed by Philip Yeo, mingle with them in person at our unique beautiful Kampung... and yes, have Teh Tarik under the Stars :) And, if you would like to stay on after, the ORTO park (with its array of restaurants) is open 24 hours.
